HC Deb 16 May 1950 vol 475 c1000
49. Miss Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent the terms of the Icelandic Loan precludes the restriction of imports of Icelandic fish.

Sir S. Cripps

I assume the hon. Member is referring to the loan which the Government of Iceland issued in July, 1949. Nothing in its terms regulates imports of fish into this country from Iceland.

Miss Ward

Will the right hon. and learned Gentleman pass on to the appropriate Minister the need to restrict the importation of foreign fish, before our fishermen are ruined?

Sir S. Cripps

I think that the appropriate Minister is fully aware of the effect of the importations of fish.

Mr. Boothby

Does the right hon. and learned Gentleman think it is a good idea to use British money in order to smash the British fishing industry?

Sir S. Cripps

I do not think so.
