HC Deb 28 March 1950 vol 473 c179
43. Captain Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many honours graduate teachers left the teaching profession in Scotland in the last five years.

Mr. McNeil

I regret that I am unable to give this figure.

44. Captain Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many teachers in Scotland were receiving a salary of less than £400 a year in 1949; and how many of these are university graduates.

Mr. McNeil

Out of 29,722 qualified teachers employed by education authorities in Scotland on 31st March, 1949, 9,344, of whom 2,333 were graduates, were receiving a salary of less than £400 a year.

Captain Hamilton

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that a university graduate is getting poor recompense if he is being paid under £400 a year? Will the right hon. Gentleman give us some indication of what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation?

Mr. McNeil

The submissions are before the National Joint Council on Teachers' Salaries just now, and I should not therefore be encouraged to comment at present.
