HC Deb 28 March 1950 vol 473 c181
46. Mr. Janner

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will be associated in any way with the National Thanksgiving Fund being set up to express Britain's gratitude to the Commonwealth and the United States for their gift parcels and bulk food supplies since 1940.

The Prime Minister

The setting up of the National Thanksgiving Fund by voluntary organisers is intended as a measure of recognition of the generosity of our friends and relations in other parts of the Commonwealth and the United States, and His Majesty's Government warmly approve it and wish it the greatest possible success. This is to be a voluntary expression of thanks for the gift parcels which have been widely enjoyed, and I feel sure that we shall all help as we can with contributions great or small.

No direct contribution of public money will be made, but, as the Chancellor of the Exchequer said in answer to my hon. and learned Friend the Member for Kettering (Mr. Mitchison) on 23rd March, special arrangements have been made for the Post Office to display posters and collect contributions.
