HC Deb 28 March 1950 vol 473 cc186-7
55. Mr. Colegate

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of revenue derived from Death Duties for each year from 1920 to 1949 giving separately that part of the total receipts derived from agricultural estates and that part derived from all other forms of property attracting Death Duties.

Sir S. Cripps

The hon. Member will find particulars of the revenue derived from Death Duties in the Finance Accounts of the United Kingdom for each year. The amount of Death Duties paid on agricultural estates is not separately recorded but on the present basis the figure is estimated to be about £3.3 million a year.

Mr. Colegate

Would the right hon. and learned Gentleman agree that that drain from agriculture is exercising a serious effect at the very time he wants to increase the capital engaged in the industry?

Sir S. Cripps

I think the comparatively good treatment given to agricultural land under these provisions has been demonstrated and accepted.
