HC Deb 28 March 1950 vol 473 cc161-2
12. Mr. Leslie Hale

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is now prepared to reconsider his decision to refuse extension of compassionate leave, or to grant compassionate release to Private Grace Wrigley, whose mother is gravely ill and who is needed to care for brothers aged nine and 15 years.

Mr. Strachey

I have looked carefully into this case, but regret that I must confirm this decision.

Mr. Hale

Does my right hon. Friend dispute the facts as set out in the Question? Is he aware that this lady enlisted for only two years and has already served 18 months? As this will cause the greatest possible hardship, will he not consider the matter?

Mr. Strachey

I looked into the family circumstances as carefully as I could, and from the evidence available it seems possible for the family to meet the circumstances and hire domestic help. If my hon. Friend has any further evidence to put before me, I am very ready to consider it.

Mr. Hale

Will my right hon. Friend consider a short extension while the evidence can be submitted?

Mr. Strachey

Perhaps we could look at it this week.
