HC Deb 28 March 1950 vol 473 c185
53. Mr. Gerald Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that unless Section 10 of the Finance Act, 1949, is amended, many amateur operatic and dramatic societies will be unable to carry on; and if he will bear this in mind when he is framing his Budget.

Sir S. Cripps

Representations have been made to me in the sense of the first part of the Question; and I will, of course, bear these representations in mind in framing my Budget.

Mr. Williams

Whilst thanking the Chancellor for saying that he will bear this in mind, is he aware that if an amateur theatrical company employ a professional producer or conductor, or any other form of professional person, they cannot reclaim this tax however genuinely they are an amateur society?

Sir S. Cripps

I am aware of the difficulties, which have been brought to my attention.
