HC Deb 16 March 1950 vol 472 c1252
64. Mr. Wyatt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why Treasury permission was given to Messrs. George Newnes to spend approximately 90,000 dollars on buying reminiscences of the Royal Family by a Miss Crawford.

Mr. Gaitskell

It is contrary to long-established policy to give details of individual Exchange Control applications. The acquisition from foreign countries of the reproduction rights of books is not, however, restricted.

Mr. Wyatt

Could my right hon. Friend say why dollars should be allowed to be expended in this case at all because, in the case of such a book, it should have been possible to buy sterling rights for sterling cash.

Mr. Gaitskell

I am not sure that I follow my hon. Friend, but we cannot impose a censorship on these matters.
