§ 50. Mr. Wyattasked the Lord President of the Council whether, in view of the fact that the Press have not yet voluntarily set up a General Council as recommended by the Royal Commission on the Press, he will now introduce legislation to provide a Statutory General Council.
§ The Lord President of the Council (Mr. Herbert Morrison)I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to Questions by my hon. Friends the Members for Goole (Mr. G. Jeger) and Maldon (Mr. Driberg) on 9th March.
§ Mr. WyattIn view of the scurrilous headlines and other disgraceful matter which have recently been appearing in the "Evening Standard," will my right hon. Friend urge upon the Press the importance of the speed with which they set up this General Council and the importance of putting teeth into the General Council, so that iv may not be necessary to have a statutory body?
§ Mr. MorrisonI have no doubt, in view of the general opinion on that matter, which I believe to be accepted by responsible journalists, that that is a consideration which will be kept in mind.
