§ 13. Sir Peter Macdonaldasked the Minister of Works if he is aware of the shortage of cement supplies in the Isle of Wight; and what steps he is taking to deal with the situation which is delaying housing schemes.
§ Mr. StokesTotal deliveries of cement to the Isle of Wight over a period are adequate for essential requirements, but Newport can only handle small vessels, and from time to time bad weather seriously interrupts shipments causing temporary shortages. The most recent interruption was due to the gales early in February. At my suggestion the suppliers have arranged to meet the Island Chamber of Commerce this week to discuss ways and means of improving the position.
§ Sir P. MacdonaldWill the right hon. Gentleman ensure that if the present transport companies are not carrying out their duties in supplying this cement other companies will be allowed to do so, because this has been going on for years?
§ Mr. StokesSo far as my information goes, the ships concerned belong to the cement company and it would be better to await the discussions which are now going on in the Isle of Wight before commenting further.
