HC Deb 13 June 1950 vol 476 c10
17. Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent the captive bolt humane killer is now alone used for the killing of animals for food in Scotland; and what steps he has taken to forbid the use of the electric stunning method.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. McNeil)

The captive bolt humane killer is extensively used throughout Scotland, but at some of the larger slaughterhouses and bacon factories pigs are stunned by electricity. I have no power to forbid its use.
