HC Deb 26 July 1950 vol 478 c452
54. Brigadier Smyth

asked the Minister of Defence if he can now say whether as a result of the recent tour of the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, any agreement has been reached with India and Pakistan regarding combined defence both for their own security and in the interests of Imperial defence generally.

Mr. Shinwell

The C.I.G.S. made only brief halts at Delhi and Karachi and, therefore, no opportunity was afforded for general discussions on Commonwealth defence problems. Field Marshal Slim took the opportunity, however, of renewing informal contacts with Indian and Pakistani military leaders.

Brigadier Smyth

Will the Minister realise that it is very important indeed to bring these two nations into closer accord? If he can do anything in that direction in the sphere of defence, would he guarantee to do so?

Mr. Shinwell

I can assure the hon. and gallant Gentleman that the importance of this has not been overlooked.
