Mr. Watkinsasked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been drawn to the extensive damage likely to ensue from the passage of exceptionally heavy tanks over roads and weak bridges in Breconshire; and what compensation will be made to the county council if this practice must be continued.
§ Mr. StracheyNormally, tracked vehicles are moved only on routes previously arranged with the Ministry of Transport and the local authorities. I understand that there were recently two incidents in Breconshire where tracked vehicles used routes for which such arrangements had not been made and that some damage was done to the roads. Steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence. Any damage caused by the movement of tracked vehicles is paid for b3, the War Department.
