§ 8. Major Beamishasked the Secretary of State for War whether the Bureau of Current Affairs pamphlet entitled "Western Germany Today," written by Mr. Basil Davidson, has been examined by his Department, with a view to its use in the Army for educational purposes; and with what result.
§ Mr. StracheyThe regular purchase, on behalf of the Army, of Bureau of Current Affairs publications ceased on 31st December, 1949. From that date the War Department has bought only those pamphlets or map reviews that it desires. The pamphlet, "Western Germany Today," has not been examined by the Department, and I am informed that there is no present requirement for another pamphlet on this subject.
§ Major BeamishWill the Secretary of State give an assurance that this pamphlet will not be used in any circumstances at all, in view of its extremely partisan nature?
§ Mr. StracheyAs neither I nor my Department have examined it, I cannot give an assurance about it, but I am told that such a pamphlet is not at the moment required in any case.
§ Mr. Henry StraussDid the right hon. Gentleman study the public correspondence in which this Bureau took part earlier this year, and observe that the director saw no reason either for regret or apology when the Bureau published misstatements of fact?
