asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made with the scheme to grow rice on a large scale in North Borneo.

Mr. Cook

The Colonial Development Corporation and the Government of North Borneo are jointly undertaking a two-year scheme, with the object of proving the economic possibilities of mechanised production of rice and alternating crops on a large scale in this area.

Is it not a great pity that this cautious approach to this problem was not also used by the Overseas Food Corporation in East Africa?
