HC Deb 10 July 1950 vol 477 cc957-8
51. Mr. Keeling

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any further statement to make about the grounds on which the Italian Government is not honouring its obligation to repay drawn bonds of the 4½ per cent. Austrian Guaranteed Loan.

Mr. Ernest Davies

The position is that the Italian Government have not repudiated their obligations, but, before making payment on account of the capital sum, are seeking clarification on certain points from the Austrian Government.

Mr. Keeling

Do the British Government think that that attitude is reasonable? If not, what further action are they taking to obtain for British bondholders their rights?

Mr. Davies

A meeting of the Anglo-Italian Economic Committee has started today and this matter will be brought before it.

Mr. Nicholson

The Minister referred only to the capital sum. What about the interest?
