HC Deb 05 July 1950 vol 477 cc448-9
8. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Postmaster-General by what authority identity cards are demanded at post offices when depositors draw their Post Office savings.

Mr. Ness Edwards

By Regulation 60 CC of the Defence (General) Regulations, as extended by the Emergency Laws (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1947.

Sir W. Smithers

Is it the policy of His Majesty's Government to continue these inquisitorial methods indefinitely, even in peace-time?

Mr. Ness Edwards

I am rather surprised at the hon. Gentleman saying that. There is a gang of thieves going about the country today committing frauds on Post Office savings, and we must protect the public.
