HC Deb 05 July 1950 vol 477 cc460-1
32. Mr. Peter Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken in the Colonial Empire to produce high quality palm fibres suitable for the manufacture of hats, in view of the fact that there is no supply of such fibres within the sterling area.

Mr. J. Griffiths

The possibility of producing palm fibre suitable for panama hats is being investigated in Kenya.

Mr. Smithers

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is a substantial opportunity here for developing a useful cottage industry in the West Indies in particular, and also for assisting local manufacture? Will he consult with the President of the Board of Trade to see whether that can be achieved?

Mr. Griffiths

Yes, Sir. Those who are interested in the trade of this country would help us if they would state specifically what their requirements are. We could then discuss on a tangible basis whether such development could be encouraged in the Colonies.
