HC Deb 05 July 1950 vol 477 c465
33. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies in view of the questionable procedure by which children are adopted in Cyprus, whether consideration will be given to the need of regulations being enacted similar to those now operating in Hong Kong and Ceylon, including strict inspection of the adoptions now adversely affecting child life.

Mr. J. Griffiths

I am already in touch with the Governor on the question whether legislation to regulate adoption should be introduced in Cyprus. Meanwhile, if my hon. Friend would let me know of any cases of which he is aware in which adoption in Cyprus is affecting child life adversely I will have them looked into at once.

Mr. Sorensen

Is my right hon. Friend aware that already there is admittedly in Hong Kong a most undesirable method of adoption amounting almost to serfdom, and that a somewhat similar procedure has been followed in Cyprus?

Mr. Griffiths

I am discussing the matter with the Governor of Cyprus to see whether legislation should be introduced.
