§ 5. Sir George Harvie-Wattasked the Minister of Supply the reasons for the decision to close down the two steel-making plants at Monk Bridge and Paisley respectively.
§ Mr. G. R. StraussThe plant at Monk Bridge was bought and that at Paisley 4 erected to meet special needs during the war, and were continued in operation to reduce the severe post-war shortage of crude steel, although it was known from the outset that they would be producing at a loss. In view of the overall increase in steel output, it would no longer be justifiable to continue the operation of these uneconomic plants. I am glad of this opportunity of emphasising the valuable contribution which all those working in these plants have made over a critical period.
§ Sir G. Harvie-WattAm I to understand from what the Minister says that those plants have been worked at a loss ever since they have been in operation?
§ Mr. StraussWithout looking it up, I do not think they have ever done anything but work at a loss.
§ Sir William DarlingCan the Minister say what steps are being taken to supply some alternative industry for these valuable factories?
§ Mr. StraussYes; the matter is being considered by the Board of Trade, and they have already let part of one of the factories for some other industrial purposes.
