§ 25. Mr. Grimondasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has any further information to give about arrangements during the Festival of Britain in Edinburgh.
§ Miss HerbisonAs the hon. Member is aware, the official events of the Festival of Britain in Edinburgh will be the International Festival of Music and Drama, with which a variety of subsidiary cultural events is associated, the Clan Gathering, the Exhibition of Scottish Architecture and Traditional Crafts and the Exhibition of Eighteenth Century Scottish Books. Preparations for these events are proceeding satisfactorily, and the hon. Member may be interested to learn that the Scottish Committee of the Council of Industrial Design propose to hold a knitwear competition in Shetland in March next, and hope to show some fine entries from it in the Exhibition of Architecture and Traditional Crafts.
§ Mr. GrimondI am obliged to the hon. Lady, especially for the knitwear. As Edinburgh shows the way to London in the holding of satisfactory festivals, I take it that we can be assured that the Government will give the fullest support to their own Festival in Edinburgh next year?
§ Miss HerbisonThere has not been any doubt at all since the beginning of this programme.
§ Mr. Hector HughesIs there any reasonable hope that the seaborne exhibition will visit North-East Scotland, because people living there have very little opportunity of coming to London to see the main Exhibition?
§ Miss HerbisonI can only refer the hon. and learned Member to the answers he received from the Lord President on this question.
§ Sir W. DarlingHas the hon. Lady considered giving Aberdeen £20, the same as was given to Edinburgh, and telling them to do without the ship?
