§ 4. Sir W. Darlingasked the Secretary of State for Scotland the debt per head of population in the six largest burghs in Scotland in the period 1949–50.
§ Miss HerbisonAt the end of the local financial year 1949–50, the figures asked for were: Aberdeen, £55; Dundee, £50; Edinburgh, £29; Glasgow, £55; Greenock, £45; and Paisley, £57.
§ Sir W. DarlingWould not the hon. Lady agree that these figures show very clearly what prudent local government management can do in relation to the debt burden on the citizen?
§ Miss HerbisonI certainly do not agree with the conclusion which the hon. Member has drawn from these figures. Many matters have to be taken into account, and particularly the houses built by local authorities.
