HC Deb 06 December 1950 vol 482 c356
43. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what provision has been made by the Government of Mauritius for labourers to farm uncultivated land.

Mr. J. Griffiths

A pilot land settlement scheme covering a three-year period was approved this year. The scheme will make available about 600 acres, a large part of which was previously uncultivated, for small holdings and allotments. In addition, the Food Production Board has allotted extensive areas of previously uncultivated Crown land to growers.

Mr. Rankin

Could my right hon. Friend say what is the total amount of uncultivated land in Mauritius?

Mr. Griffiths

Not without notice.
