HC Deb 06 December 1950 vol 482 cc353-4
29. Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what reply he has sent or proposes to send, to the protests which have been made by paramount chief of Anlo in the Gold Coast regarding the alleged police attack near the village of Suipe.

Mr. J. Griffiths

An exhaustive investigation has been made into the incident, and a full statement based on sworn testimony was made in the Legislative Council yesterday. I will send the hon. Member a copy. I much regret the loss of life, but I am satisfied that there is nothing in the conduct of the local authorities which demands a special inquiry, and that the police used firearms only in self-defence and after ample and repeated warnings had been given. I am asking the Governor to inform the Chief accordingly.

Mr. Gammans

Will the right hon. Gentleman state the number of casualties and whether the police suffered any casualties?

Mr. Griffiths

I should like to have notice of that question.
