HC Deb 19 April 1950 vol 474 cc122-3
23. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the scheme to develop a salt industry in the Turks and Caicos Islands was cancelled what expense was involved in the cancellation; and what alternative employment is being provided for the inhabitants.

Mr. Cook

The Governor of Jamaica recommended some time ago that the salt industry in the Turks and Caicos Islands should be brought under public control, and this recommendation was approved in principle by my right hon. Friend's predecessor. Negotiations on the sub- ject have been proceeding for some time, but it has not yet been possible to settle how this recommendation might best be implemented. The proposal has not, however, been abandoned, and the second part of the Question does not, therefore, arise. The industry at present enjoys better sales and prices than it has done for some time, and there is therefore no need for special measures to find alternative employment.

Mr. Russell

Will The Minister try to speed up these negotiations, which seem to be dawdling under public control?

Mr. Cook

indicated assent.
