HC Deb 19 April 1950 vol 474 cc136-7
50. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Minister of Food if he will extend the supplementary cheese ration to rural district and urban district roadmen.

The Minister of Food (Mr. Maurice Webb)

Roadmen employed by rural district councils already receive the special cheese ration. I cannot, however, see my way to extend it to roadmen employed by urban district councils since, as a rule, they have access to catering facilities.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that many urban district councils include large rural areas—Orpington, for example? Will he make the arrangements a little more elastic, so that urban councils which are part rural Lan give the cheese ration to their road-men in the rural districts?

Mr. Webb

I am sorry that I cannot add to my answer. That may be one of the borderline, marginal, cases.
