HC Deb 19 April 1950 vol 474 cc139-40
58. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Food whether he can now make any statement about the relaxation of present restrictions on the permitted charge for meals in restaurants.

Mr. Webb

I have recently discussed these regulations with representatives of the catering trade and I will make an announcement as soon as possible.

Sir I. Fraser

When will that be?

Mr. Webb

I cannot say exactly. The catering trade are quite happy about the progress being made in the discussions They themselves issued a statement this week, saying that they are quite happy to let the matter go along as it has been going along. I should think that in about two or three weeks' time we shall be able to announce a decision.

Mr. Keeling

Will the right hon. Gentleman give us an assurance that, in considering this matter, he will be influenced more by the need to earn dollars than by the fear of criticism from dogs in the manger?

Mr. Webb

If I may coin a phrase, every relevant consideration is under constant review.

Mr. Remnant

is this another trading arrangement, or will the House be informed first?
