HC Deb 19 April 1950 vol 474 cc141-2
62. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food what reduction has been made in personnel and expenditure in his Department's office and organisation in Covent Garden Market since 28th November, 1949.

Mr. Webb

Since November, 1949, the staff has been reduced by one and the expenditure by £200.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I am informed that very few people in Covent Garden know of the existence of this office? Would he please keep a record of the officials' times of going in and coming out, because I am informed that there is a tremendous waste of time, personnel, and money in this office, which serves no useful purpose?

Mr. Webb

I should like to have details of these allegations. So far as the ignorance of Covent Garden is concerned, perhaps even the hon. Gentleman's Question will penetrate to Covent Garden.

63. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food how many traders at Covent Garden give advice to his Department in an official capacity; and what amount is paid to each as a retaining fee.

Mr. Webb

None, Sir.
