HC Deb 18 April 1950 vol 474 cc12-3
39. Brigadier Clarke

asked the Minister of Pensions if he is aware that the increase in the prices of butter and bacon will now make it almost impossible for old-age pensioners to buy these commodities; and what he proposes to do about it.

Dr. Summerskill

I have been asked to reply. I would refer the hon. Member to the statements made by myself and my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Food on 4th and 5th April, respectively.

Brigadier Clarke

Does the Minister realise that the cost of living has been going up ever since the Socialist Party came into power, and that these poor people cannot afford to go on living with the cost of living going up all the time? There was a penny before Christmas, a halfpenny now; what is it going to be after today?
