HC Deb 04 April 1950 vol 473 c979
3. Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware of the growing dissatisfaction expressed by the Army Civil Service Union of Singapore regarding their claims for salary increases and housing allowances, and if he is yet in a position to make any further statement.

Mr. Strachey

Certain increases in salary, referred to in my predecessor's reply to the hon. Member on 15th February, 1949, were authorised last year with a retrospective effect from August, 1947. I understand that certain further claims for salary increases are being considered in Singapore. A claim in respect of housing allowance is under consideration by my Department.

Mr. Gammans

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when this business will be settled, as it has been going on for some time now?

Mr. Strachey

Part of the claim is being dealt with locally in Singapore, and part, in respect of housing allowances, is being dealt with in the War Office in London. We shall try to get a decision early.
