§ 9. Mr. Piratinasked the Minister of Education how many nursery school places have been provided during 1949, and how many are expected to be provided during 1950.
§ Mr. TomlinsonThe number of children on the registers of recognised nursery schools was estimated as 22,000 in January, 1949. Two hundred and eighty-eight additional places have been provided since that date, and buildings for a further 120 places are expected to be completed before the end of 1949. I cannot at this stage give a forecast for 1950.
§ Mr. PiratinHas not the Minister received the plans of the various local education authorities with regard to nursery schools; and in view of the question which has been put to him by the hon. Member for the Combined English Universities (Mr. K. Lindsay), and as this is an important matter, will he give attention to it?
§ Mr. TomlinsonWe have not only received plans for nursery schools but for many primary and secondary schools 1493 which will be required for the implementation of the 1944 Act; nursery schools are taking their place among the rest.
§ Mr. Kenneth LindsayHas the right hon. Gentleman been able to establish a school on the lines designed by the Nursery Schools Association, which, I think, halves the actual cost?
§ Mr. TomlinsonNo, I believe that there is one going up at the moment, but it is not yet established.
