HC Deb 27 October 1949 vol 468 cc1515-6
47. Major Tufton Beamish

asked the Lord President of the Council what has been the cost of advertising the 1951 Exhibition in the United States of America; and how much will be spent for this purpose during the next six months.

The Lord President of the Council (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

No expenditure has so far been incurred in the U.S.A. for advertising the Festival of Britain 1951, and none is expected during the next six months.

Major Beamish

How on earth does the Lord President expect to attract American visitors or exhibitors, which I imagine is one of the main objects of the Exhibition?

Mr. Morrison

This is a new line of attack. It is now complained that I am not spending enough on the Festival. I should have thought that advertising prematurely would not be a wise form of public expenditure.

Mr. Tolley

Would not my right hon. Friend agree that through Question and answer in this House world-wide advertising has been secured?

Mr. Morrison

There is something in that, and in that respect I ought to thank hon. Members opposite.
