HC Deb 26 October 1949 vol 468 cc1320-1
43. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in view of the poor roads in Togoland, what developments are taking place in respect of the provision of better roadways.

Mr. Creech Jones

My hon. Friend will find details of the road development work and programme on pages 99 to 101 of the Report by His Majesty's Government to the United Nations on the Administration of Togoland for 1948.

Mr. Sorensen

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the fact still remains that these roads, which were mainly constructed by the chiefs, are extremely poor, and is any further attempt to be made to improve the roads in this neighbourhood in view of the amount of revenue derived from these people?

Mr. Creech Jones

The revenue derived from the territory is some £360,000, but the Gold Coast spends about £625,000.

Mr. Sorensen

Is it not true that a good deal of the traffic in the Gold Coast is from Togoland?

Mr. Creech Jones

No, Sir.
