HC Deb 26 October 1949 vol 468 cc1312-3
21. Sir Ian Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies approximately how many British subjects were obliged to evacuate from Palestine during the disturbed period preceding the British withdrawal; and if he will make a statement as to compensation to these persons for their personal losses.

Mr. Creech Jones

Approximately 1,600 British subjects left Palestine at the time in question, but about half of them elected to remain in neighbouring countries. On the subject of compensation I have nothing to add to the reply given to the hon. Member on 5th May, 1948.

Sir I. Fraser

is it not a fact that His Majesty's Government are hoping that the Palestine Government will agree to pay compensation; and if the Palestine Government do not pay it will His Majesty's Government consider paying it themselves?

Mr. Creech Jones

I cannot give that pledge. There are no Palestine balances, of course; but in any case discussions are going on in Tel Aviv with the Palestine authorities in regard to liabilities.
