HC Deb 26 October 1949 vol 468 c1321
45. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Lord President of the Council what is the latest estimate of the cost of the 1951 Festival of Britain on the South Bank of the Thames; and, in view of the economic and financial crisis, if it is still proposed to hold it.

The Lord President of the Council (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply yesterday to the hon. Member for Maidstone (Mr. Bossom).

Sir W. Smithers

How can the right hon. Gentleman expect continued help from America if, when good dollars are sent to us to relieve us from the results of four and a half years of Socialist Government, they are squandered in this way?

Mr. Morrison

If I may say so, that is a mischievous question. Dollars are not being spent on the Festival of Britain.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that he could not have this Festival without dollars?

Mr. Nally

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the Festival of Britain, important as it is, will fade into insignificance compared with the festival the Orpington Tories will have when at last they get rid of the hon. Member?
