§ 63. Commander Nobleasked the Minister of Works when the Hans Crescent Hotel ceased to be used as a transit centre for European volunteer workers; to what use it has been put since; when it is expected to be released; and what yearly compensation rent is being paid.
§ Mr. KeyThe Hans Crescent Hotel ceased to be used as a transit centre for European volunteer workers on 14th December, 1948. It has since been held for preparation as a hostel for colonial students. It is not usual to disclose the compensation rent.
§ Commander NobleIn view of the shortage of hotel accommodation, does not the Minister think that it is a bad thing that this sort of hotel should be kept empty for nearly a year when it is obviously costing the country a large sum in compensation rent?
§ Mr. KeyThe use of this hotel has been a matter of much consideration, but the need for accommodation for colonial students is such that I feel that it ought to be retained for that purpose.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterCould not this hotel have been used instead of No. 2 Park Street?
