HC Deb 21 November 1949 vol 470 c31
57. Mr. John E. Haire

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether Russian jamming of British Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts continues; and whether there has been any recent extension of the activity.

Mr. Mayhew

The answer to the first part of the Question is, Yes, Sir. The answer to the second part of the question is, No, Sir.

Mr. Haire

Has my hon. Friend any information that these B.B.C. broadcasts were causing anger in Russia, as M. Vyshinsky said recently at U.N.O.? Is it not very likely that the anger was caused in the Politburo, because those broadcasts represent the only truth that gets into circulation there? Will my hon. Friend continue to encourage the B.B.C to make these broadcasts?

Mr. Mayhew

We have evidence that they are being listened to, and I have no doubt that they are being appreciated by those who take the trouble to listen.
