HC Deb 10 November 1949 vol 469 c1399
62. Mr. Erroll

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether exports to Angola constitute exports to a hard currency country for the purposes of his regulations.

Mr. Jay

There are no regulations for the purposes of which a definition of hard currency markets is required. We are anxious to expand our exports to Angola as well as to all other parts of the Portuguese monetary area.

Mr. Erroll

Is this so that increased importations of diamonds and other precious stones can take place from Angola?

Mr. Jay

Generally speaking, the Portuguese monetary area is a desirable market, because we are importing a considerable amount of essential commodities from that area.
