HC Deb 07 November 1949 vol 469 c885
64. Colonel J. R. H. Hutchison

asked the Minister of Transport whether the division of the country into areas as provided for under the Transport Act has been decided upon; in how many such areas have consultative committees been set up; and in how many they remain to be appointed.

Mr. Callaghan

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply my right hon. Friend gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Enfield (Mr. Ernest Davies) on 25th July.

Colonel Hutchison

How does it come about that nearly two years have been taken to appoint all these area consultative committees? Is the hon. Gentleman aware that many of the questions going to the central council are in fact questions which should go to area consultative committees, rather than to the central council?

Mr. Callaghan

If they go to the central council, I have no doubt that there is machinery for sending them on to the committees.
