HC Deb 18 May 1949 vol 465 cc407-8
15. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he now has further information respecting recent disturbances in Uganda; how many were arrested and sentenced; and for what charges.

Mr. Creech Jones

No incidents have been reported since 4th May. The Commissioner inquiring into the disturbances will shortly commence work. One thousand, four hundred and thirty-five persons were arrested; 60 persons have been sentenced up to 14th May. The charges include rioting after proclamation, arson, looting, assaulting the police and the possession of stolen property. The Chief Justice is making special arrangements to expedite the disposal of cases in Kampala.

Mr. Sorensen

Could the Colonial Secretary say whether any of the prisoners gave political or other reasons for their behaviour?

Mr. Creech Jones

I would prefer not to enter into the causes of the trouble until the Commissioner has reported.

Mr. Sorensen

Could the Colonial Secretary say when the Report is likely to be available?

Mr. Creech Jones

Obviously it must take a month or so, but I cannot give any date.
