HC Deb 18 May 1949 vol 465 cc406-7
10. Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to control the entry of immigrants into Hong Kong, in view of the present state of emergency.

Mr. Creech Jones

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 3rd May to a similar question by my hon. Friend, the Member for East Nottingham (Mr. Harrison) to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. Gammans

Are the Government considering any question of registration for immigrants or the local population as was done in Malaya so as to avoid the dangers of the situation which arose in Malaya in very similar circumstances?

Mr. Creech Jones

Yes, Sir, and the question is under very active consideration, but it is impossible for me at this point to make a further statement upon it.

Sir Ronald Ross

Is the Colonial Secretary aware of the grave dangers of allowing an excessive number of people of whatever type?

Mr. Creech Jones

Yes, Sir.
