HC Deb 05 May 1949 vol 464 c1190
9. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will introduce legislation to secure uniformity of summer-time extensions as between county and borough licensing authorities.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Ede)

These extensions are granted where the special requirements of the district render it desirable, and it is natural that there should be some variation in this respect between county districts and boroughs.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that in quite a number of instances this lack of uniformity creates indefensible anomalies which add very considerably to the inconvenience suffered by the police authorities, the licensees and the general public?

Mr. Ede

There may be some cases where anomalies arise, but, on the other hand, this is a special extension which must have regard to the requirements of the particular neighbourhood.
