§ 22. Mr. Granville Sharpasked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is satisfied that the national interests have 539 been furthered by the application of the Clow differential; what evidence there is that domestic consumption of electricity at peak load periods declined as a result of the winter quarter surcharge; and whether he will make a statement about future policy in this matter.
§ Mr. GaitskellYes, Sir. I consider that the introduction of the differential tariff was one of the factors which restrained peak demand this winter, reduced the amount of load shedding and so enabled production to continue without interruption. I have no statement to make at present about the policy to be adopted next winter.
