HC Deb 23 March 1949 vol 463 c351
13. Sir P. Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what complaints have been received from the Jamaican soap manufacturers at the excessive price of £234 a ton which they are obliged to pay to Argentina for tallow which they can buy in the United States of America for £80 a ton, although both these countries are dollar areas; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Mr. Creech Jones

Press criticisms in Jamaica, which have been repeated in the Press here, have been brought to my notice. No allotment of tallow from Argentina has been made to Jamaica for 1949. The Colony is making a purchase in the United States.
