HC Deb 17 March 1949 vol 462 cc2277-8
50. Colonel Clarke

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in view of the proposed increases in the salaries of higher civil servants, he is prepared to consider the question of increasing the pensions of retired senior civil servants to meet the increase in the cost of living.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Glenvil Hall)

No, Sir. I can hold out no hope of amending the two Pensions (Increase) Acts, passed in 1944 and 1947.

Colonel Clarke

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the pensions of many men who have held high positions in the Civil Service are today, owing to the rise in the cost of living, quite inadequate to meet their essential needs and family expenditure?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

One cannot deal with this matter in isolation. We cannot take senior civil servants and deal with them alone.
