§ 33. Sir Waldron Smithersasked the Minister of Pensions how many ex-Service men have had their pensions reduced since 1st January, 1949; and by how much.
§ The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Pensions (Mr. Simmons)During the period 1st January, 1949, to 28th February, 1949, some 20,000 pensioners were medically boarded. Of this number there were about 4,000 reductions in pension because of improvement in the member's condition; in 13,600 there was no change; in 2,400 the assessment was increased. The annual value of the reductions and increases is £110,000 and £72,000, respectively.
§ Sir W. SmithersWould not the Minister agree that these men who fought for freedom should be the last people to have their pensions reduced?
§ Mr. SimmonsIf the hon. Gentleman is suggesting that the policy of the Ministry is to reduce pensions and deprive pensioners of their rights, I would draw his attention to a leaflet, "Are you sure," which has been sent to every pensioner in the country, and in connection with which the Minister, in a personal covering letter, states that we are willing to help men who do not feel that they are getting justice to get it.
§ Mr. ParkinCan my hon. Friend account for the fact that he gets very few Questions nowadays?
§ Sir W. SmithersWhat is the good of paying pensions with ever-depreciating pieces of paper?
