HC Deb 15 March 1949 vol 462 c1885
24. Major Gates

asked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to ensure that the Appointments Boards have sufficient suitable vacancies to offer to the many commercial travellers and travelling salesmen who are now losing their means of livelihood through insufficient petrol allocations.

Mr. Isaacs

The Appointments Offices seek additional openings for persons registered with them by every suitable method, including personal visits to employers. I have no evidence that increasing numbers of commercial travellers and travelling salesmen are losing their employment. Since June, 1948, there has been a considerable increase in the number of vacancies for commercial travellers and travelling salesmen notified by employers.
