HC Deb 15 March 1949 vol 462 cc1881-2
9. Mr. William Teeling

asked the Minister of Labour what are the latest figures of unemployment in Brighton; and how long a man or woman has to be out of work before he is officially considered as unemployed for the compilation of those figures.

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Isaacs)

At 14th February, the number of unemployed was 3,902. All persons registered as unemployed on the day of the count are included in the figure, irrespective of the length of time they have been unemployed.

Mr. Teeling

Can the right hon. Gentleman answer my question how long persons usually have to be out of work before being officially considered unemployed?

Mr. Isaacs

Any time from one day onwards. If they are unemployed at the moment the count is taken they are counted as unemployed. If the hon. Gentleman wishes it, I can ascertain the number in this area.

Mr. Teeling

How often is the count taken? It may include people who become unemployed only a day or two before. There may be 6,000 unemployed in Brighton.

Mr. Isaacs

Yes, but they may go to work a day or two after the count.
