HC Deb 30 June 1949 vol 466 cc1510-1
50. Mr. Thomas Reid

asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of pigs in Britain now.

Mr. T. Williams

The number of pigs in Great Britain on 4th March, 1949, as returned by occupiers of agricultural holdings exceeding one acre, was 2,295,000. The figure for June, 1947, was 1,294,000.

Mr. Reid

Is it not a fact, therefore, that there has been a great increase in the pig population since the end of the war—take, for instance, the 1946 figures —and will my right hon. Friend say how he has managed to get sufficient food to feed these pigs?

Mr. Williams

We have had to obtain food in all parts of the world and get whatever we could.
