HC Deb 30 June 1949 vol 466 c1513
56. Mr. Symonds

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will extend to Germany the provisions of the scheme already operating with other European countries for the interchange of agricultural student employees.

Mr. T. Williams

I hope that as time goes on it will be possible to extend the list of European countries taking part in this useful scheme and I would certainly not exclude the possibility of its extension to Germany. For the time being, however, our general policy is to concentrate on building up the number of exchanges with the countries already included in the scheme.

Mr. Symonds

Is my right hon. Friend aware that an over-rigid interpretation of this rule is resulting in the exclusion from this country of a young student, whose family has an excellent anti-Nazi record, who wants to come to this country for a limited period of one year before emigrating to our Colonies, and will my right hon. Friend please do something to try to allow this young man to come here as he desires.

Mr. Williams

I could not by means of question and answer lead with an individual case of that description. The Question refers to the general situation of German students.
