HC Deb 30 June 1949 vol 466 cc1511-2
53. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he has now considered the Exmoor Survey carried out by the Agricultural Economics Department of the University of Bristol; and what proposals he has which will assist marginal land farmers in this and similar areas to achieve the promise of substantial increase in the production of beef cattle and sheep, indicated in the report.

Mr. T. Williams

Yes, Sir. I have considered this Survey, which makes a valuable contribution towards the general problem of increasing production from the marginal areas of this country. My hon. Friend will remember that on 24th January last I announced an extension of the Marginal Production Scheme which is designed to assist farmers in areas such as Exmoor.

Mr. Collins

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the provisions contained in his announcement in January are quite inadequate for tackling this very large and important task, and will he look into the matter again and submit proposals in accordance with the needs of the situation?

Mr. Williams

I can assure my hon. Friend that the question of marginal land is under almost continuous consideration.
